I’m listening to the song “Fearless” by Pink Floyd as I write this. It was in my head when I woke up and I asked Alexa to play it when I sat down to write this morning. At the end of the song there are Liverpool football supporters singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and it send shivers up and down my spine. I’m not a Liverpool supporter or a huge English football fan but it is the voices riding on the song as one that I like.
I like the first verse of the song “You say the hill’s too steep to climb…” It gives me hope. It makes me think that there is nothing that is too hard to overcome. There are certainly things that may never be able to be accomplished but if you stand at the base of the hill and start walking, you never know where you might get or where it will take you. You might not get to the top of the hill but you might find another path as you are making your way up the hill. Maybe that path takes you to a beautiful clear spring with a perfect rock overhang that you can step up onto and dive right into the spring.
Another verse that touches me is "Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd-Smiling". I want to be that idiot. I want to turn around and face the crowd and know that there is some secret that I have inside that the crowd does not have. I want to be able to face the crowd with that secret and stand up and do what I want to do and not what the crowd wants me to do. That is where I am coming from. When we get in front of the crowd and they think we are an idiot, can we turn around and look at them with that little grin and start up the hill? If so I think we will get the Liverpool supporters singing for us as we scale the hill.
